Garage Door Warning Signs
Garage doors need regular inspections and occasional professional care. Indicators of problems include flashing lights, squeaking, grinding and other noises. If your garage door slows down or doesn’t work smoothly, call for professional help! Always Think Safety!
Garage doors will gradually get out of alignment and adjustment, even from normal use. Garage doors are like automobiles – if you never look at them and give them some TLC, they will eventually quit or become hazardous. It is much less expensive and inconvenient to take care of problems in advance than to wait for more serious trouble. An alert owner and a trained and certified professional can help. Several types of adjustments need to be done regularly.
For example:
- The photo eyes become blocked or out of alignment. If the photo eyes are not pointed toward each other, the lights will blink on the photo eye itself, and sometimes the main garage door opener lights will flash continuously. You may not be able to close your garage door if this happens. A homeowner can sometimes grab the photo sensor and bend it to come into alignment, and the light may stop blinking. Be careful when doing this.
- The motor forces may get out of adjustment. Over time, especially without lubrication and adjustment, the garage door itself will become hard to operate. The tracks sometimes get bumped. The photo eye lenses get dirty. Rollers may bind up and drag if they have not been properly lubricated. Hinges can crack and break if they are running dry. These are only a few of the problems.
- Operator force settings do NOT usually need adjustment. It is important for a homeowner NOT to adjust the operator force settings! These adjustment dials are set initially at the factory and are adjusted by the professional technician when the operator is first installed. If your garage door is not running smoothly, the operator can reverse the door so it will not close, and the lights may begin flashing.. This problem requires professional care – do not adjust these settings yourself.
We strongly recommend professional preventive maintenance to be done on your garage door at least every few years.
WARNING: The safety systems on your garage door require both the garage door and the operator to be working properly and to be in correct adjustment. An out-of-adjustment operator can push and pull the door with up to hundreds of pounds of force, and can even cause injury or death if a child, person or pet gets caught beneath the closing door!
